If you or a family member is in business...even if you run that business out of your home, you've had quite a wild ride for the last twelve months. The consolation prize is that everyone is just as confused and concerned as you are. So, what are you going to do? There are folks out there that want and need what you offer, but more people than ever are competing for the same dollars. What's even worse is that every one of your competitors is saying the same thing you are in an attempt to sell the same kind of thing you are. You can do one of two things. You can go back to the drawing board and figure out how you're bigger and better than your competition, or you can do something they didn't teach you in school...you can figure out how to be different than your competition...and focus on that. As the developers of Contrary Marketing™ we believe that being different is better than being better. There are many areas of business that lend themselves to this contrary approach, but for now let's look at one in particular. A good place to start being different is in the way you introduce yourself. I know this is going to sound crazy, but when you introduce yourself... stop telling people what you do. Start telling people what problem you solve. Now, that's different. You want people to view you as valued problem solver no matter your field of expertise. For instance, rather than say, "I help make someone's skin look beautiful", you can turn that into a problem statement by changing it to, "Unhappy with aging skin? I can help." The effect of this minor shift in language is powerful and ultimately profitable. Do you really know the problem you solve? You probably do, but when's the last time you shared that information when you introduced yourself. Plus, it can be a little awkward at first because most of us have never communicated our message in this way. Here's the Tip: You should create a problem statement for your business and use it when you introduce yourself.
