Do We Really Need Another Trade Show? PDF Print E-mail
ASI_San_Diego
When a NEW trade show was announced in Southern California…you could hear a collective sigh across the country reverberating through our industry.   Questions were being asked:
Why another trade show?

Why in this economic season?
Why is this a good idea?

Here is the FreePromoTips take on the ASI Show San Diego with short video clips.
We trust you will be able to get a feel for this inaugural industry event.

THE VENUE
The location was amazing.  I’ve presented education at trade shows across the country for years and I would have to say this location was the best I’ve ever experienced.  (Although I also love Long Beach, which has many of the same attributes). The great sunny Southern California weather, and refreshing sea breezes, were invigorating.  The convention center is directly across from San Diego’s famous Gas Lamp District, which has a variety of great restaurants in all price points.  Many hotels are within walking distance, so you really don’t need to drive anywhere, which is always a plus.  Suppliers and distributors seemed to love the location.

SHOW TRAFFIC
What about the all-important trade-show traffic question? Suppliers want the aisles packed with buyers, which is becoming increasingly more of a challenge, since these days less people are inclined to leave their office and family to spend money attending a trade show.   Ah…but there is the old adage…you need to spend money to make money.  Trade show exhibitors and attendees need to consider the investment of time and money required to attend these events.

Based on the many suppliers I spoke with, the feeling was that they were surprisingly pleased by the turn out, especially for a first time event.
Then there is the classic, quality of the buyers issue.  It seemed that those who attended this show were people engaged in the industry, who saw the value of making the investment to be there.

EDUCATION

The education sessions were great:  ASI_Education

Since I had the privilege of presenting education at the ASI Shows for many years, I have an inside understanding of the value placed on education.  A team of quality presenters had packed sessions, which I shocked to see.  I just didn’t think education sessions would be this well attended.  Perhaps this is a positive sign that people are hungry to learn ways to prosper in this “interesting” economy.  The Tony Robbins keynote presentation was nice, but the rah-rah exercises towards the end were a little bit much for me.

THE FUN FACTOR

If you've never attended an ASI Show, you need to go and meet Promo!  ASI_Promo

You can’t underestimate the value of the Fun Factor at trade shows.  We work hard and some like to play hard…whatever that means to you. Without question ASI knows how to run a trade show.  From the opening where God Bless America was sung, which I really think was a great touch, to the closing party and the always populate Gala party, it seemed that a good time was had by all.

The show day ends on an up note:  ASI_TheClose

In conclusion, I think the ASI Show in San Diego was a good show and I am glad I took the time to go. I look forward to next year.  Regardless of how one might feel about ASI and the cost of their products, I believe that they have the resources and commitment to produce quality trade shows and provide products that are good for the industry.

In conclusion, do I think there are too many trade shows?  Maybe, but as long as business is being done, relationships are being developed and people are having a good time...trade shows are a good thing.  If they don't bring value, folks can simply choose to not attend.  Your comments are welcome below.

I am not a supplier or distributer, however, I just decided to read the comments regarding ASI since I will be going into business for myself really soon. I see nothing wrong with a company trying to knock out their competitor. Isn't that business. I know every company wants to succeed and in some cases in order to do that you have to be ahead of the competition. I am sure it is not a direct attack against any company particularly, but ASI trying to be the best they can be. What is wrong with a company that is willing to try new things and improve their business as much as possible. I do not believe ASI should hold back their creativity and business savvy because other companies cannot keep up. You have a choice to attend ASI or not. If SAAC is really good they will hold their own and succeed. It's that simple! Stop complaining and boycotting and join in the fun of competitive marketing.

As far as I can tell the ASI Expo moved out of Las Vegas and went to San Diego.

Whoa Dave! FreePromoTips is not in the pocket of ASI. This overview was my personal take on the show. I'm a SAAC member and Rick Greene, our past president is my good friend and regional manager at the company I am affiliated with. This show will be stepping on the SAAC Show a bit and of course that's a concern.

It's true that ASI is "diligent" in building their business and people can take that for what it is.

Regarding ESP...I've used other products and I am really excited about the new ESP WEB, especially as a Mac user. In the end the choice is doing what's best for your business. That's your decision to make.

I encourage you to not be too hard on FreePromoTips and continue to benefit from all the good stuff we offer.

Have a nice day!

Tim Andrews as always sends more Candy Coted BS. GREED is there only motivation!
I as well as over 300 other Distributors have vowed not to use any ASI products and are planing an all out effort to NOT buy from any Supplier who suports tha ASI Show San Diego. JUST SAY NO TO THEIR GREED!

Thanks for the review. To correct Dave's conclusions: We've been in close contact with SAAC for the past year regarding ASI San Diego and invited the association to exhibit. Several officers and the executive director were at the show and our events at ASI San Diego to visit members and prospects. On our 2011 date: the San Diego convention center wasn't available earlier next year without conflicting with other industry events. Why California: It has the most distributors and suppliers of any state, and our research shows that fewer than half of the distributor firms sent even one account executive to an industry show in recent years. We want to help suppliers reach the 5,000+ distributor firms in California, grow their business with those firms and improve the education and involvement of our industry with those underserved firms. We'll be exhibiting and supporting the SAAC Show this year, as we have for decades, and welcome its involvement next year at ASI San Diego.

Well another industry buy out by ASI!!
I use to like Promo Tips but now that they are in the pocket of ASI NO MORE!
I guess they just don't get it, ASI is trying to put the SAAC Show out of business HELLO, They even tried to get the same venue as SAAC in Long Beach but it was not available. Next year they are moving the date of their show closer to SAAC's date to try agin to kill more of the numbers attending the SAAC Show. ASI is not just comming to CA. because they are nice they are comming here to stamp out the competiion. They are not here to help our industry they are here for pure GREED!Don't be fooled.

Nice article on the show. It looks fun. I think the ASI products are kind of expensive, but I guess they are good. I don't use them, but I might try ESP, since it looks great in your video.

Hasn't an easy order entry system been tried before? I'm not sure how that will work.

Interesting take. I do think there are too many shows, but if they are productive I guess it's OK. I've been to the ASI shows and they are good. Great videos!

Wow! Great coverage. I may go next time. I too liked the God Bless America song. I've never seen that at a trade show. Thanks for all your great promo tips.
